Academy II School Bio Academy II Middle School is an alternative middle school designed to address and meet the needs for three separate learning groups of students. These groups are identified as students in need of special services, dissaffected and non-disruptive (Bridges Program), and in need of an enriched curriculum (AEP). Students are selected from sixteen public schools in our district. Their school guidance counselor, teachers, and principal select them for consideration. Students selected into the Bridges Program are recommended due to a history of retention, attendance concerns, lack of academic success and behavior. Students selected into the Acceleration and Enrichment Program take an entrance exam and are selected by their levels of success on the exam as wellas teacher recommendation. Students in need of special services are placed by the district. The average enrollment at Academy II is about 150 students. The teacher student ratio for Bridges is 1:12. The ratio for the AEP program is 1:20. Student ratios for special services are determined by the classification code. The instructional program addresses a sixth, seventh, eighth grade curriculum. The AEP addresses a seventh, eighth, and ninth grade curriculum. This is supported with Physical Education, Art, Computer Technology, Life Skills, Applied Technology, World Languages, and Character Education. There are numerous programs and activities that take place during the year. To support changing behaviors for success, we implement a behavior management plan that we call Learning to Apply Myself Poaitively (L.A.M.P). The vision of Academy II is comprehensive, but very simple. "At Academy II we read, write, and problem solve proficiently." We attempt to achieve this vision with a mission that offers students prescriptive instructional plan in mathematics and language arts, computer based reading program experiences, project based activities, educational field trips, cooperative learning situations, conflict resolution sessions, intensive writing and reading experiences, extended day learning opportunities, parent involvement, activities and ongoing positive events that lead to success on the G.E.P.A.,district curriculum, and mastery of the Core Curriculum Content Standards. To support the district's curriculum and inititives we implement elements of America's Choice School Design as our Whole School Reform Model. This model is a standard based program with a comprehensive focus on Language Arts and Mathematics. We also include the 100 Book Challenge in our plans for promoting literacy. |
