*Alarming Trends*




• Obesity Effects 10 Million U.S. Children
• The Percentage of Young People Who Are Overweight Has Tripled Since 1970!
• 61% of Teen Snacks Have Little Or No Nutritional Value (cookies, chips & cake)
• Teenagers Today Drink Twice As Much Carbonated Soda As Milk
• Nearly Half of Young Children, Ages 12-21, Do Not Engage in Physical Activity on a Regular Basis




*Alarming Results*



* Type 2 Diabetes

(As many as 30,000 children have type 2 Diabetes, a type of diabetes that was once almost entirely limited to adults.)


* Cardiovascular Disease

(A recent study in Pediatrics reported that more than one fourth of children, aged 5-10, had one or more adverse cardiovascular disease risk factors. And that number rose to 60.6 percent among overweight children of the same age.)


* Osteoporosis

(Calcium is critical during youth for the formation of strong bones. Bye age 17, approx. 90% of ca child’s bone mass is established.)
*88% of boys and 79% of girls, ages 2-8, meet the dietary recommendations for calcium.
*52% of boys and only 19% or girls, ages 9-19, meet their calcium recommendations.



* Iron Deficiency

(Female adolescents are at greatest risk for iron deficiency.)


* Low Self Esteem

(Obese children are often excluded from peer groups, discriminated by adults, have poor body image & experience psychological stress.)
