On a daily basis 3,400 Jersey City students are transported on more than 200 routes supported by district buses and vehicles operated by contracted vendors. The department also provides transportation services to athletic teams for practices and contests and brings students to many locations for field trips in support of classroom learning activities.
The department also administers the distribution of bus tickets and the Non-Public Schools Aide-in-Lieu of Transportation Service Program to students who meet mileage requirements.
School Bus Safety is a priority. Buses are inspected twice a year by state inspectors. District inspectors conduct random inspection of buses and conduct safety evacuation drills. In addition, bus aides and drivers regularly attend classes and seminars on defensive driving, vehicle maintenance and managing students on a bus.
