CAT Magnet Program With the inception of the Commercial Art Technology Program in September, 1996, the Department of Visual Arts became another link in preparing the students of Jersey City Public Schools with the expertise needed in meeting the technological labor demands of the twenty-first century.
Students enrolled in this program are trained in the skills necessary for employment in the fields of graphic arts/advertising and computer application fields. A four year sequence will provide students with intense study in visual arts and applied technology.
This is an excellent program for students who wish to pursue their education in the visual arts with the realization that technological expertise will extend personal capabilities in creating products, solving problems and designing concepts which are highly sought skills in the marketplace of the new century.
Course Sequence The current course sequence is immersed in design opportunities evolving from inter and intra disciplinary explorations.
CAT 1A and 1B provides a strong foundation in traditional art applications. It is the vision of this program to create an artist who is both highly skilled in traditional skills, as well as, a graphic artist who can enhance fine art skills with the tools of technology. CAT 2A and 2B strengthens students’ skills in Adobe Software Packages, such as, Photoshop and Illustrator while simultaneously continuing to foster the interdisciplinary skills of traditional and technological art forms.
CAT 3A prepares students for fine arts, creating thematic portfolios and offers the option of post secondary study of art. CAT 3B provides students with a sampling of career possibilities in Commercial Art Technology through exploration of graphic design and advertising.
CAT 4A and 4B recreates a real workplace environment within the classroom while continuing to advance traditional and technological skills.
Upon completion of this program of study, students will have a set of marketable skills to enter a career in the arts.
