USDOE AWARDS JERSEY CITY SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT TEACHING
AMERICAN HISTORY GRANT¡K$1m dollars over the next three years

In an effort to assist Jersey City Public Schools Social Studies teachers, a professional development opportunity has arrived. The Teaching American History Grant sponsored by the USDOE has awarded nearly $1 million for a three-year program developed by Mr. William Colley and Mr. Stephen Sokolewicz in conjunction with the American Institute for History Education. Look for more information regarding the start of the program scheduled for December, 2005. Below is provided certain particulars regarding the program.

In May 2005, William Colley and Stephen Sokolewicz developed a proposal
Over a month¡¦s time, this grant was written and sent to the USDOE for approval
In late September, 2005 the USDOE awarded the 2005 Teaching American History Grant to the Jersey City Public Schools
The total award for the three-year grant is $998,822.00
The Teaching American History Grant...the goals
* to demonstrate how school districts and institutions with expertise in American history can collaborate to ensure that teachers develop the knowledge and skills necessary to teach traditional American history in an exciting and engaging way
* to design U.S. history curricula and lesson-units that provide students with a historical continuum
* to create a cadre of trainers who will then guide all other U.S. history teachers
The Teaching American History Grant...a three-year program

Teachers will attend 11 days of colloquia, field trips, and summer institutes

Year 1 focuses on the formative years of the American Republic, including study of the roots of American tradition, colonial charters, the onset of the American Revolution, the Federalist period, and slavery
Year 2 contrasts the agrarian South and the developing market economy of the North in the 19th century, exploring immigration, the Civil War, and key individual
Year 3 examines Wilsonian international liberalism, the World Wars, the Cold War, and the War on Terror
