Language Arts - Grades K-2 Early Literacy Initiative Click here for further information Jersey City has a serious commitment to improving early literacy. The overarching goal of this project is to teach every child to read on the 3rd grade level by the end of third grade. The district applied for and received the Reading First grant to supplement resources, personnel and professional development for staff members. The five particpating schools are PS# 14, PS# 15P, PS# 22, PS #34 and PS#41. |

Language Arts - Grades 6-8 Do you wish to learn more about the district's Grades 6-8 Literacy Initiatives? Please contact June Chang for more information. In grades 6-8 there is a continuation of the interdisciplinary approach built in the previous grades. Students are presented with a wide array of reading genre at their appropriate, individual reading level, as well as in depth writing opportunities. The language arts instruction is designed to provide students in need with adequate support to develop grade level profiency in reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing, In addition, it offers challenges and opportunities for advancement to all students. The "balanced literacy"instructional approach includes: • interdisciplinary instruction; • modeling of strategies and techniques; • demonstration; • guided practice • independent practice. |

For further information about the district's Seconday Literacy Initiatives, please contact Dr. Catherine Surdovel, Supervisor, for more information. The High School Literacy program offers a range of courses that cover a wide spectrum. In addition to the required courses the program presents a wide array of electives that extend and extend the students background knowledge in various facets of literacy. It also prepares them for higher education, the world of work, and beyond. Building on the foundation established in the lower grades the program includes: • Theme based programs • Expansion of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards • College level introductory course • Advanced Placement courses for college credit • Literature programs exploring the American experienc and other cultures • Media and publication • Research through Technology • Extensive SAT preparation and test taking strategies • Theatre appreciation • Language Arts and the legal profession |
