Professional Development

Professional Development in the Jersey City Public Schools has one goal, to improve student achievement. To accomplish this goal the district’s professional development plan has been designed to accommodate teachers’ needs at all phases of their professional career from the new teacher just starting out to the veterans who are looking for inspiration and ideas to add to their repertoire.
New Teacher Induction

Tina Del Giodice, Staff Developer
As new teachers begin their career, they are introduced to the Jersey City Public Schools at New Teacher Induction, a six day colloquium which includes sessions in district programs and policies, differentiated instruction, project-based learning, authentic assessment, teaching in an inclusive setting, curriculum integration, and a school-level orientation to familiarize each new teacher with the procedures and routines of the school to which he/she has been assigned. Additionally, four follow-up days of training are provided every other month throughout the first year of employment for all new teachers. This enables new teachers to gain more experience in developing techniques and strategies to help their students achieve. It is also a practical venue to network with other new teachers from around the district.
Teacher Academy / Teacher Support Institute
Teacher Support Institute was specifically designed as follow-up training for non-tenured teachers who wish to perfect their teaching skills. It offers these novices practice in instructional strategies and teaching techniques that will help them become seasoned professionals.
Teacher Academy was specifically designed to help veteran and non-tenured teachers who need to augment their teaching skills. At Teacher Academy teachers acquire support employing the sound teaching practices that help their students to become successful.
August Anticipation is a week-long series of workshops to help teachers get the school year off to an exciting start. Scheduled for the week before school opens, August Anticipation provides teachers with creative ideas for setting up classrooms, designing bulletin boards and organizing daily routines so the school year begins efficiently.
September Survival
September Survival is a month-long series of after school workshops that continue where August Anticipation leaves off. All teachers, new and not so new, are invited to participate in this practicum that covers topics such as “Developing and Maintaining an Efficient Grade-book,” “Organizing and Managing Paperwork, Forms, Reports,” and Grouping Students for Effective Instruction.”
Authumn Overtures
Autumn Overtures is another month-long, after-school workshop series open to all teachers. Designed to continue the support initiated at the beginning of the school year, the topics in Autumn Overtures include: “Meeting the Individual Needs of Students,”
“Putting Together a Good Substitute Teacher Package,” “Using Rubrics Effectively,” and “Conflict Resolution” to name just a few.
