Science & Research Magnet Program The objective of the Science and Research Magnet Program is to serve the students who have an interest in science, medicine, or engineering. The program offers students a first class education in technical knowledge and skills to prepare them for the science careers of the 21st century. Students may apply to the program by submitting an application which is reviewed by a committee of teachers. Attendance, grades, teacher recommendations, scores on standardized tests, and the student's statement of interest are considered during the application process.
Initially, students enroll in Honors Biology I and a course in Computer Applications. They will also participate in introduction to Science Research and may take part in science oriented field trips. During the second year, the students take Honors Chemistry I, SAT preparation classes, and complete a research project. Advanced placement courses are taken during the third year in conjunction with Honors Physics I. During their senior year, students may select Anatomy & Physiology or Computer Science as an elective course and they may continue to take advanced placement courses.
Additionally, students above the tenth grade level may be involved in independent science research. The student may take research courses in the eleventh and twelfth grades through recommendation by the Research Coordinator. Long range projects may be suitable for competition at the local, state and national level. Our students have been extremely successful in these competitions. Some research students are placed with a mentor from industry or a local university. Grants have been awarded to our students from AT&T, the NJ Academy of Sciences, and NY Academy of Sciences and Project SEED.

For Your Information The Science Research Technology Magnet Program is designed to promote analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students engage in independent and team research and hands-on projects and are encouraged to enter local, state, and national competitions. Mentors and internships with industries and local universities are available to students and are paid work experiences in the field. Community service is also a requirement of the program for all students. |
