SMART Start (Substitute Management and Resource Training) was developed as a district initiative to assist substitute teachers who are new to the Jersey City Public Schools. SMART Start focuses training on the district policies and procedures that substitute teachers must understand in order to successfully teach in the Jersey City Public Schools. It also provides an in-depth review of the of programs and services offered to our students by the district so that substitutes cultivate a thorough understanding of what is needed to successfully teach in the Jersey City Public Schools.
Participation in SMART Start is an employment requirement for all newly hired substitute teachers. Individuals who wish to work in the Jersey City Public Schools must attend this 3-day training before they can be assigned to a substitute position in the district.
