Planning from Children's Interest
Presenter: Dr. Muriel Rand, a professor from NJCU
Dates: Saturday, March 3rd and March 24th, 2007
No longer are the prek teachers utilizing the District’s Thematic Curriculum, but rather a mandated research-based curriculum, called High/Scope. Full implementation of the High/Scope Preschool Curriculum includes a different way of planning for young children. The two-part workshop, "Planning from Children's Interests", provided additional support for administrators, teachers, and teacher aides in planning classroom activities for the preschoolers.

This two-part workshop has helped me……
"...to understand the real meaning of children’s interests, as well as how to incorporate and plan for small group and large group activities".
Carmen Nieves, Curries Woods ECC

"...focus more on the children’s active learning through their interests."
Marita Red, Jersey City Academy of Learning

"...to understand that it’s okay for me to feel like I am not doing enough. I have felt that I had to be ‘teaching’ more, whereas I don’t have to feel that way."
Anonymous

"...understand more of Piaget’s Theory and focus on the three kinds of knowledge."
Falita Williams,
Starting Points of Hudson County

"...to learn that the teacher’s role is to provide the language (only) for things the children already know."
Azizah Chavers-Barley, P.S. #12

"...apply theory to practice. I feel more empowered as a preschool teacher and very enthusiastic about applying what I learned from this workshop."
Linda Gelbard, P.S. #38

"...understand the Piagetian Theory of children’s schemas. The social, physical, and logical-mathematical knowledge were some of the missing elements of understanding children and their interests."
Lourdes Reyes, It Takes a Village

"...open my mind to become a better teacher."
Jennifer Machin, Academy House

"...with the preparation of lesson plans and most especially with how to get children interested in learning. My biggest problem was how to begin large group time and the video demonstration helped a lot."
Angeline Deline, Alexander D. Sullivan School

"...understand what is a schma and its relationship to the learning process of the children."
Chona Veluz, Director,
International Learning Center

"...change my idea about the large group activities."
Olga Huergo, Kiddee Korner I

"...understand that there are numerous opportunities throughout the entire preschool daily routine to incorporate the children’s interests and the High/Scope key developmental indicators."
Alexandra Zea, Oasis
planning fom childrens interest 7
"...have a better understanding of how prek children learn and a clearer comprehension of my role in the prek classroom as the facilitator of the learning process."
Valerie Morris, Cunningham ECC

"...broaden my insights in the implementation of the High/Scope approach, particularly in planning the daily preschool activities based on the children’s interests."
Corazon Jose, Sunnyside Academy VIII

"...gain a better understanding of the High/Scope philosophy. It also helped me understand why we need to plan around children’s interests. It was a wonderful workshop. I’m so glad I came!"
Lynn Macagnano P.S. #25

"...implement a more meaningful large group in the classroom. It gave me different ideas."
Robin Banks, Starting Points
