Think Straight "A's": Attitude, Attendance, Achievement

Student Attendance Program

The Attendance Program of the Jersey City Public Schools is designed for regular communication with parents regarding the presence and absence of their children, our students. Every school has staff responsible for researching the reasons for student absence. Parents are responsible for providing the appropriate approved documentation when their children are absent.

The Law states: _N.J.S.A. 18A: 38-25

Requires compulsory education in New Jersey: “Every parent, guardian or other person having custody and control of a child between six and 16 shall cause such child regularly to attend the public schools of the district or a day school in which there is given instruction equivalent to that provided in the public schools for children of similar grades and attainments or to receive equivalent instruction elsewhere than at school.”

The Jersey City Public School Code of Conduct clearly defines the Student Attendance Policy for Elementary and High School Students, as well as acceptable forms of documented absences. The Code of Conduct furthers explains the consequences of undocumented absences as well as the parental/ student right to an Attendance Appeal.

An integral part of the student attendance program is the Truancy Task Force. Two vans drive the city streets daily, stopping school age children, and responding according to the needs and rules of the district.
