Statement of Goals of James J. Ferris High School
To achieve the ideals of our philosophy, we adhere to the following goals:
1. To help all our students achieve the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and Cross-Content Workplace Readiness Standards.
2. To prepare our students for the High School Proficiency Assessment by further developing reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing skills.
3. To help our students acquire ease and fluency in speaking and to develop the skills of accurate and critical listening.
4. To ensure that our non-English speaking students receive sufficient instruction to function effectively in the English language and the American culture.
5. To provide opportunities for special education students to be included in as many appropriate general educational settings as possible.
6. To develop within each student a feeling of self-worth, self-discipline and self-achievement.
7. To assist our students in forming a code of behavior based on moral and ethical principles.
8. To promote the acquisition and use of the skills involved in logical, critical and constructive thinking.
9. To alert our students to the dangers of drug use and to guide them in forming a code of behavior which will protect their health and safety and the health and safety of others.
10. To help our students acquire knowledge of the physical and biological sciences and their relationship to our environment.
11. To develop an understanding of the social sciences and their role in our society.
12. To help our students acquire mathematical skills they will need in the workplace and in their daily lives.
13. To help our students acquire job entry skills they will need in the workplace and in their daily lives.
14. To promote the importance of world languages and prepare our students to communicate in at least one language other than English.
15. To train our students in the use of applied technology in the classroom and workplace and to prepare them for changes in the field.
16. To teach the individual to organize information and to use print and non-print library media resources and associated technologies in an effective and meaningful manner.
17. To provide counseling for students who wish to share their experiences and hopes for the future and for students experiencing personal and/or school-related problems.
18. To inspire our students to an understanding and appreciation of art, culture, language, literature and music.
19. To provide our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be health-literate and physically educated.
20. To furnish the required information and guidance of higher education to those students who wish to pursue it.
21. To inculcate rational understanding of American democratic principles, practices and institutions.
22. To develop an understanding of the global economic system and its American counterpart.
23. To help our students discern and evaluate the intricacies and influence of mass media.
24. To foster an appreciation of the significance of family life and the individual's contribution as a family member.
25. To stimulate participation in the extra-curricular life of the school and to develop interests for wholesome use of leisure time.
26. To encourage students to develop pride in their community and assume their civic responsibilities, especially their right to vote.
27. To instill a respect for law and authority.
28. To teach respect for all people regardless of religion, gender, age, physical capability, sexual orientation, race, national origin or socioeconomic status.
29. To develop an open and caring relationship among students, teachers, administrators and parents.
30. To develop a strong partnership with the business community and local colleges and universities.
