Cochrane Field Update on Scheduled Testing Of Water In Schools Continuing to Keep Cochrane Field Closed

This is the place to visit when it comes to getting the latest information on health and health-related issues in the Jersey City Public Schools!

Studies prove that students who are healthy are more likely to succeed in school, and student success is a top priority of the Jersey City Public Schools! We work to provide learning environments that are safe and healthy, as well as programs and policies that assist in preventing illnesses, injuries and disease. However, from time to time, problems can arise, and when they do, we take immediate action to correct them.

Many of our schools were built 50 to 100 years ago, and so there is constant need to upgrade and repair them. A leaking pipe within a wall or a floor, for example, might lead to a problem with mold. When this happened in one of our school gyms, we reassigned the students to another school while we tested to make certain there was no danger. Most recently, while working in a voluntary testing program with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, we learned there was lead in the water at six of our schools. When we learned this, we brought in bottled drinking water, capped the tainted water sources, retested the water, and worked to determine the sources of the lead infiltration and to remedy the problems via filtration and other systems.

This winter, some New Jersey school districts had purchased beef that had been recalled by the U.S.D.A. Gratefully, we were not among that group.

ENVIRONMENT ALERT

Dr. Charles T. Epps, Jr., Superintendent of Schools, announced that the Cochrane Stadium at Caven Point has been temporarily closed. This has been done as a precautionary measure based on the recent discovery of elevated lead levels in similar stadiums in Hoboken and Ewing Township. Although no complaints of health issues have been issued pertaining to Caven Point, the District felt it was best to err on the side of caution.
The Jersey City Board of Health will be testing this site for lead on Friday, April 18, 2008, and the District has hired an independent environmental firm to conduct a second test.

Test results will be issued immediately when available.
