Celebrating Our Success:
Dr. Solberg is the winner of the most prestigious "Distinguished Secondary Teacher Award' awarded by Princeton University. She receives a cash award of $5,0000 and the school library receives $3,000 in her name. Her award will be presented at the Princeton graduation ceremony in June.
Tellisia Williams has received the 200 Club of Hudson County scholarship award of $2,500.
Vineet Tyagi was selected as a recipient of the Hudson County Guidance and Student Personnel scholarship award.
Sophomore Abigail Cohen won a gold medal in the National Mythology Exam and Junior Neel Jingar won honorable mention. This year’s topic was a series of questions about the House of Atreus and the Theban myth cycle. Abigail is now eligible to compete in a national scholarship competition.
Junior Chalita Washington was accepted into the Kean University Project Star, a five-week summer program in the sciences.
Junior Rania Saleh was accepted into NYU’s Pre-College Summer Program. In addition, she received a full-scholarship for the approximately $4,000 program cost.
Academics and Student Life:
The week of May 5th, AP tests were be administered in French, Spanish, Government and Politics, Statistics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, English Literature, US History, European History and Studio Art.
The week of May 12th over 300 AP exams will be administered in Biology, Physics B, Physics C, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Psychology, English Language, Art History, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and World History.
The junior prom will be held on Friday May 16, 2008 at the Cougar Dome. The theme is “A Night in Paris.”
The peer leadership group is planning a backpack collection for underpriviledged children. Students in each homeroom will collect school items in a backpack which will be distributed in August at the Jacob Javits Center.
Patrick Simon and Ashlei Hardenberg returned from their Holocaust Tour in Europe. They plan a gallery event of their photos and to make presentations to the history classes about their experiences at the Holocaust sites in Prague, Berlin and Krakow. Patrick Simon shared his experiences and led a discussion with his English class to commemorate and reflect on Holocaust Memorial Day on May 2nd.
Ms Lam's Mandarin students returned from their week long journey to China. The students have over 1500 pictures to share with their classmates and are already talking about plans for another visit. While in China the students impressed the native Chinese with their mastery of Mandarin.
The JROTC went o Daytona, Florida to compete in the Finals of the Eastern Rifle Championships.
Mr Selby and the Mock Trial team went to the Brennan Court House in Jersey City to receive their awards for participating in the Mock Trial competition. The event is sponsored by the Hudson County Bar Association.
REBEL of McNair Academic participated at the Green Expo the weekend of April 26th at Liberty State Park. They handed out information on the effects of second hand smoke.
The VPA students in band and voice performed a spring concert on Thursday May 8th at Snyder High School Auditorium.
All juniors attended the college fair at Raritan Plaza in Edison, New Jersey with their counselors on Thursday, May 1st.
The JROTC held a fundraiser at Pizzeria Uno in Jersey City on May 1st.
Senior Olivia Flick held her senior art show “Lurk” at Bagua Juice on Friday, May 2nd. The show will be on exhibit until May 30th and the art works are available for sale. The opening was well attended by MAHS and VPA faculty, students and members of the community. Senior Joelle Zigman provided live piano accompaniment of both original and cover songs.
Faculty and Staff:
The administration provided a delicious breakfast for Teacher Appreciation Day on Thurs. May 8th.
The PTA gave all the teachers a Specialty ID badge for Teacher Appreciation Day.

Mr. Thomas O'Shaughnessy has been selected to represent the Jersey City Public School District in the State Teacher of the Year Recognition Program. Mr. O'Shaughnessy is an English Honors/Journalism teacher at McNair Academic High School.

Juniors Jessica Ndungu and Edward Underwood are among the highest scoring participants of approximately 4,700 students out of a pool of over 140,000 who requested consideration in the 2009 National Achievement Scholarship Program. Our students were eligible for consideration because MAHS administers the PSAT each year to students in the 9th, 10th and 11th grades Seniors do not take PSAT, because they have moved on to take the actual SAT, usually taking the test for the first time in the Spring of their Junior year.
Antoinette Harris, teacher in the WIN/ACCESS Program, and Christina Lambert, student of the WIN/ACCESS are being recognized for their dedication to education at the Claremont Layfayette Presbyterian Church.
Ahmed Hassan and Harsh Khatri attended the 10th Congressional District Art Competition awards ceremony at the Newark Musuem and received certificates for participating. The works will be on exhibit at the Newark Museum until April 20th.
Clubs, Sports & Student Life:
Senior, Richard de los Reyes, under the supervision of Mrs. Wasmuth and Mrs. Black, has completed a snapshot video requested by US News and World Report. The videos will be posted here!
A lucky group of students from the Mandarin Chinese Language classes are visiting China over the spring break with faculty advisors Ms. Lam and Mr. Selby.
Another lucky pair of students, juniors Ashlei Hardenburg and Patrick Simon, will be touring Prague, Czech Republic, Berlin, German, and Krakow, Poland over Spring Break as part of a Holocaust Education program.
Dr. Solberg's Shakespeare classes will have their first performance at the Shakespeare Festival on Thursday April 17th in the gymnatorium.
Students in Ms. McMorrow, Mr. Brijlal and Mr. Witt's autistic classes along with members of Mr. Taunean's Peer Leadership Group, made bracelets to sell in support of Autism Awareness Month.
Ms. McMorrow's Autistic class will be participating in the life skills / work study program at the Occupational Center on Tuers Ave.
The entire Junior class will be attending the college fair at Raritan Center in Edison, N.J. on May 1st.
Dr. Solberg's classes went to the annual Shakespeare Festival at NJCU on 4/2/08.
Peer Leadership collected books for their book drive which ran from Thursday 4/3/08, ending Thursday 4/10/08.
The JROTC, Cougar Battalion, competed against 48 teams in the Eastern Region Drill Champions on Saturday, March 29, 2008. The Cougar Battalion placed in 7 of 8 events winning 2nd place overall in the unarmed category. The McNair Academic Unarmed team won an expense paid trip to Florida to compete in the NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL DRILL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS to be held May 2-4,2008.
Academics & Faculty:
The Middle States Planning Committee met on Tuesday April 8th and completed the formulation of the objectives for school improvement, which was disseminated to the faculty at the April 16th in-service meeting. The faculty was broken up into groups to gather data, such as teacher demographics, school history, programs and curriculum, hospitality for Middle States evaluators, etc. needed to complete the Middle States Process.
Ms. Holly Smith ’95 of the English Department has been accepted to attend the 2008 NJ Council for the Humanities Teacher Institute of Monmouth University: "The 20th Century and the African American Experience," Sunday, July 6-Friday, July 11. The course is lead by Dr. Clement Price of Rutgers University/Newark.
