The Ollie E. Culbreth, Jr. School The cornerstone for the first P. S. No. 14 was laid in 1867. In 1869, the first classes were held under the auspices of its first principal, Abner Joslin. By the turn of the century it was evident that more room was needed. On May 6, 1908 the cornerstone for the second P. S. No. 14 was laid with the school opening in 1910. Both buildings continued to serve the community for another 43 years. In 1953 on April 14, the cornerstone was laid for the current building with its opening taking place in 1954. In 1973 an annex was added to the main building providing 11 additional classrooms. In 1998 P. S. No. 14 was named after a beloved principal Ollie E. Culbreth, Jr. who had been a student at the old P. S. No. 14, graduating in 1953. He returned in 1987 as its principal until his retirement in 1990. Tragically, he passed away in an automobile accident in 1995. Though time is moving right along, his memory and legacy will live on, in the school that bears his name. -Cynthia Harris, Jersey City Librarian - New Jersey Room The administration and staff members of this school, thank Ms. Cynthia Harris, former teacher of P. S. No. 14, for the documentation and pictures provided for this website.
