Nicolaus Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus - P.S. #25
Nicolaus Copernicus School is a school of proud tradition and solid achievement. A dedicated, caring and concerned faculty, with high expectations for all students, is one of the bases of our success.

Another base of our success is the parents of our students, who are concerned, involved and supportive. Working together to provide the best education for our students has proven to be a successful combination, as the statistics on the State Report indicates.

In addition to the strong educational program, Nicolaus Copernicus School also services students who require special attention. The Bilingual Program accommodates students whose native languages include:Gujarati, Hindi, and Arabic. ESL (English as a Second Language) provides help and support for students from a number of different native languages. These students provide the school with a diversity and multiculturalism that reflects the larger society. Students who require Special Education are also served in self-contained classes, inclusionary classes and resource rooms with as much mainstreaming into regular classes as possible. The Child Study Team, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy are additional services provided to help these students and their parents.

The Guidance Department, with two Guidance Counselors, is always available to help students and their parents in any and all situations and difficulties whether they are personal, familial or academic. In their expanded role, the counselors are engaged in a comprehensive guidance program, enabling the counselors to service 100% of the students.

Students are also able to participate in numerous extra curricular activities to round out their growth and to provide enriching experiences. Some of these activities include: a choral group, a growing band, an eighth grade yearbook, student newsletter, technology club and an intramural program. The Student Council serves as a student government and encourages school-wide service activities, social activities, and community projects. The Extended Day Program provides extra classes in E.S.P.A. and G.E.P.A. preparation, tutoring in various subjects, clubs in the areas of homework, art, technology, recreation, and behavior modification. In addition, the library media center is open until 4:00 P.M. each day and a
guidance counselor is available to parents until 4:00 P.M. every Wednesday. An after-school program, C.A.S.P.E.R., for students in grades kindergarten through grade four, is available to provide students with a safe, productive place until parents return from work. Nicolaus Copernicus students in grades five and six can become members of the Jersey City After School Club, taking part in educational and recreational activities after school hours. Older students in grades seven and eight are invited to take part
in nighttime recreation from 5:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. under the supervision of the Jersey City Department of Recreation.

Students in grade five take part in the nationally recognized D.A.R.E. program sponsored by the Jersey City Police Department. This program teaches our students effective decision-making, resistance, and communication skills to enable them to make good choices and to protect themselves.

The science program continues to be an educational focus of our program. Students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades learn and study with a certified teacher in a science lab, utilizing scientific equipment and computers to provide for in-depth study. As an outgrowth of this focus on science, Nicolaus Copernicus School has a large and active science club. This club sponsors the school Science Fair, demonstrates science lessons to students and goes on special field trips.

The Applied Technology Program continues to advance. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking skills to arrive at solutions to problems. Students must "brainstorm". The final goal is not so much the "what", as the "how" students choose to do their projects. The program has led to the formation of a Technology Club, which competes in the S.I.T.E. (Student Inventions through Education) competition in which students utilize their learning to invent practical solutions to practical problems.

Educational technology continues to be a top priority at Nicolaus Copernicus School. A state of the art computer lab is completely functional with computers, CD-ROM's, printers and modems. Students are learning to use omputers for reports, graphics and research. Expansion of this program is continuing as computers have been placed in classrooms throughout the building with hook-ups to the Internet. Students in grades K, one and two receive small group instruction in their classrooms. Students in grades
three through eight utilize the computer lab. With the adoption of the Whole School Reform Model, Co-nect, the faculty and staff engaged in intensive training to bring project-based learning, with an emphasis on the productive uses of technology, to all classrooms and to all students. All staff members have received extensive training from the Hudson County E.T.T.C. in the proper use of technology and the Internet in the classroom. A Coordinator oversees the planning, implementation, service and coordination of the ducational Technology Program on a school wide basis. Teachers continue to utilize varied methods of cooperative education in all classes to promote shared learning opportunities for all students.

To supplement and enhance the instructional program, the school is most fortunate to have a large, well-stocked library, boasting over 25,000 books, covering all subjects and areas of interest to students. The library also maintains the media center, which contains audio-visual hardware and software for use by students and teachers. A mini-computer lab has also been established in the library for student use.

With the establishment and strengthening of the School Management Team, teachers and parents are working together and learning from each other - to address and provide for the instructional needs of all students and for the school as a whole. Much effort, time and energy are presently being devoted to implementing the Whole School Reform model, Co-nect, now in its third year.

In short, Nicolaus Copernicus School's goal is to provide the best educational opportunities, environment and growing experiences for each individual child who attends our school. Nicolaus Copernicus School is a school that has a proud past, a vibrant, successful present - and yet one that is preparing its students for the future that requires new skills and capabilities.
