The Fred W. Martin School Hosts World Famous Award Winning Author For Children Walter Dean Myers Walter Dean Myers, author of over 150 books for children and young adults and recipient of the John Newbery Award, the Caldecott Award and many time winner of the Coretta Scott King Award, visited The Fred W. Martin School recently. He spent the entire day speaking with children and their teachers. The school was decorated with examples of Mr. Myers work and all of the students had the opportunity to read some of his work.
Mr. Myers spoke to almost nine hundred students and their teachers in two general assembly groups. He told the students about his experiences in writing and how he has developed as a writer. He encouraged them to continue to write each and every day. Knowing that there were many foster children in the audience, Mr. Myers shared his own personal experience as a foster child. One of his books, Somewhere In The Darkness, addresses this issue. Later in the morning, Mr. Myers worked with a small group of younger students who have read one of his books. He discussed character development and story conflict development with the children.
During lunch, Mr. Myers spoke with teachers, administrators and students as he signed copies of his work. He individually encouraged students to write as he signed their books.
During the afternoon Mr. Myers worked with a small group of teenage students who have read one of his works. He encouraged them to discuss character and story development during this period.
The Fred W. Martin School is proud of the students and grateful to Mr. Myers for his sharing his vast writing experience with young people. We hope that he will visit us again.
