Academy Awards' Night

grppic

As part of the Secondary School Initiative, each high school conducted an Academy Award's Night for the incoming Freshmen Class. Parents and students had the opportunity to meet Administration, faculty, guidance counselors, CIT's, coaches and staff.

Parents and students entered Ferris High School at approximately 5:30 where they were welcomed by the music of the Ferris High School orchestra under the direction of Mr. Michael Furstoss. As the music played, parents had the opportunity to observe different tables that were set up for each SLC. With Ferris High School becoming the Academy of International Enterprise, we currently house six Small Learning Communiites: Office Management and Procedures, Marketing, Hospitality and Tourism, Business Finance, International Studies, and the Newcomer School. Each of the SLC's were represented by teachers and students who took time out of their day to be a part of this important day as students in grammar school embark upon their first step into making the transition into high school.

Following the presentation in the lobby, parents and students were escorted into the auditorium where Mr. Jaime Morales, Principal, introduced each member of the administration and welcomed the Class of 2013. He provided parents with an explanation of the number of programs that Ferris has to offer and stress to them that the school day doesn't end at 3:05. He provided parents with a hands on music video that gave parents a visual representation of the programs that Ferris has to offer. Highlighted in the video were the numerous athletic teams for both boys and girls, the robotics club, the student council, the choir, Project TRAC Program, and the Extended Day Program. Many thanks to Ms. Mary Cruz for all her hard work on this project.

Mr. Morales then allowed parents and students to meet with representatives from the SLC that they selected in different parts of the building. Students were presented with certificates and parents had the opportunity to hear first hand the expectations staff had for the students and what each SLC had to offer.

Ms. Myrta Melendez-Escotto, Ms. Lucy Rivera, and Ms. Carmen Petito exerted an enormous amount of energy in organizing this event for the parents and students of the Class of 2013. Through their effort and hard work, a wonderful evening was enjoyed by all that took part.

Mr. Morales would like to acknowledge Mr. Cuevas Rodriguez for his assistance on the evening of the Academy Awards' Night.
