Grade Level Activities

March

 

PK- As we move into the middle of the school year, we focus heavily on language and literacy development by reading stories in small groups, listening to books on tape and acting out our favorite parts of stories.  We have special activities planned throughout the month to celebrate our favorite authors and characters.

K- During the month of March, our Kindergarten students will be creating many new memories that will last a life time by participating in the annual Kindergarten Sleep-Over.  Our Annual event will be magnificent.

Grade 1- With Spring around the corner, the First Grade will be moving into exploring the difference between fiction and nonfiction texts.   In Math, we will be working on Measurement and Geometry. 

Grade 2- During the month of March the second graders will continue working on Story Writing. The students will also be discussing and learning about St. Patrick's Day. The Second Grade teachers will continue nominating two students of the month per classroom. All the classrooms are getting ready for SPRING!

Grade 3- Students will be able to cultivate persuasion skills in composition, as well as, identify 3 kinds of angles and plot ordered pairs in Math.

Grade 4- This month in Think Block, the fourth grade will be exploring the history of  New Jersey and famous inventors.  In math, students will be touching on an array of areas, including geometry, measurement and multi-digit operations.  Finally, the children will continue to read narrative stories and write persuasive essays. 

Grade 5- The fifth graders have embarked on a new journey as they explore Ancient Greece.  They eagerly watched the 2010 Olympic Games and researched the events and athletes.  They will create posters for the winter events in cooperative groups and will present them to the fifth grade team.

Grade 6- In language arts the sixth grade will be working with speculative and explanatory writing. They will also be exploring life in the Middle Ages. In social studies they continue roaming around the Middle Ages. They will discover Feudalism, join a crusade but they must beware of the Black Death. In math they will discover the concepts of similarity, ratio and proportion.

Grade 7- The Revolution Begins! Seventh grade is living in Colonial Times and studying Colonial America.  We will study the American Revolution and the events leading up to it. We will read accounts from real soldiers and American colonists. In Math we will be studying Algebra and Test Prep.  

Grade 8-
Language Arts: The 8th grade Language Arts class will be celebrating Dr. Seuss by writing stories using Dr. Seuss's 236 classical words.  They will also be writing memoirs.
Social Studies: The 8th grade Social Studies classes will be studying economics during the month of March.  They will be using the computer lab to create ABC books utilizing subject  specific vocabulary. The 8th graders will also begin to create and build small businesses.                       
Math:  The 8th grade students will be finishing up their introduction to Algebra and will be moving into their Volume 2 text.  They will begin to prepare for the NJASK.            
Radical Algebra: The 8th grade Algebra students are working hard on the concept of exponential functions, making connections between Geometry and Algebra, and utilizing skills to solve real-life problems. The Algebra students are also preparing for the NJASK and their state Algebra Exam which will take place May 24, 2010.
