Activities

Capital One Junior Achievement Program

During the month of February, forty-five 7th and 8th grade students from James F. Murray School, advised by Karen Augustine and Marissa Bulger, participated in the Capital One Junior Achievement program where they were taught about real-life financial situations. The students were taught 18 lessons throughout the course of a month about credit cards, debit cards, stocks, bonds, and real-life budgets.

At the end of the program, they participated in an off-site field trip to the Junior Achievement Finance Park where they were teamed up with Capital One bank executives.  At the park, they were given a life situation where they had to calculate their net monthly income, create a budget, and pay bills.

The students enjoyed this real-life simulation and did a great job in preparing for the real-world!

Grade 1 Publishing Workshop

On Thursday, November 12, 2009, Mrs. Shoemaker and her student teacher, Ms. Aslan hosted a Publishing Workshop at James F. Murray School.  This workshop was designed to give the children the opportunity to share their hard work with their parents.  The children have been working on writing books, “All About Me, “ for the past month.  It was a long process for the children.  They began with graphic organizers to get their ideas on paper.  Then they wrote rough drafts, edited the drafts, and finally got to write their final piece with illustrations!  The children sang songs, read the books they wrote, and discussed the writing process with their parents.  The children were truly proud to share the end result, their books, with everyone.  They were joined by Principal Ms. Jones, Assistant Principal Ms. Sosa, reading recovery teachers Mrs. Powers and Ms. Oricchio, mucic teacher Mr. Dokus, and many parents and family members of the children.
