The Office of the General Counsel
The Office of the General Counsel is located in the Legal Department of The Jersey City Public Schools. Under the auspices of the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Norma Fernandez, it is charged with providing legal advice and guidance to the Superintendent, her Senior Leadership Team, her cabinet, administration, and other staff members on an array of legal issues involving the JCPS, its policies and programs, students, and employees.
The Office of the General Counsel’s various duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Providing legal advice to the Superintendent of Schools, her cabinet members, SLT members, the administration, and other JCPS staff members.
- Monitoring and supervising all legal matters assigned to outside law firms.
- Representing the JCPS in various legal matters including litigation matters arising under the School Laws, Special Education Laws & Public Employment Laws.
