Department Overview

The World Languages Department promotes student achievement through NJSLS-World Languages-aligned curricula, implemented by highly qualified teachers who integrate instruction with assessment, education policies that enhance and support learning, and classrooms with ready access to technology. Jersey City Public Schools provides ALL students access to high-quality, engaging language instruction. The NJSLS-WL is sequentially organized as a continuum toward higher levels of proficiency.

K-5 Curriculum

Students in grades K-5 explore the three modes of communication: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational across all language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language. Students will learn vocabulary to talk about familiar topics related to school, home, and the community using words and phrases that are memorized and practiced by the end of grade 2, and memorized words and some phrases by the end of grade 5.
6-8 Curriculum

Students in grades 6-8 focus on the three modes of communication: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational in all language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language. Students communicate using words, lists, and simple sentences to ask and answer questions, handle simple transactions or exchanges related to everyday life, and talk about subject matter studied in other classes.
High School Curriculum

Students in grades 9-12 will learn the essential language skills and cultural understandings in languages other than English necessary to live and work in a global, culturally diverse world. All language courses are developed to foster students’ communicative competence in the target language and to understand and engage with diverse cultures. The World Languages courses follow the New Jersey Student Learning Standards — World Languages and support students attain  Novice High proficiency level or higher, which is a requirement for high school graduation.
