Department Overview

The Science Program of the Jersey City Public Schools promotes student achievement through NJSLS-aligned curricula implemented by highly qualified teachers who integrate instruction with assessment, education policies that enhance and support learning, and classrooms with ready access to technology. Jersey City Public Schools provides ALL students with access to high-quality, engaging science instruction.
K-5 Curriculum

Students in grades K-5 explore the three branches of science: Earth, Life and Physical. Students begin by observing, describing, and critically thinking about the world around them. Students are then expected to demonstrate grade-appropriate proficiency in planning and carrying out investigations and analyzing and interpreting data. Students are also expected to use these practices to demonstrate understanding of the core ideas(content).
6-8 Curriculum

Students in grades 6-8 are guided through the three branches of science: Earth, Life, and Physical. The ultimate goal of the middle science curricula is to instill in students a deep understanding of the practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas of science and engineering. This understanding empowers them to engage in public discussions on science-related issues, critically consume scientific information in their daily lives, and most importantly, cultivate a lifelong interest in science.

High School Curriculum

Students in grades 9-12 will employ curricula that are NJSLS-S aligned. They will actively engage in scientific and engineering practices and apply crosscutting concepts to deepen their understanding of the core ideas in these fields. Students will be able to carry out scientific investigations and engineering design projects related to the disciplinary core ideas.
